Raw materials for the production of graphite electrodes

Sep. 05, 2023

The main raw materials for the production of various carbon graphite products are petroleum coke, asphalt coke, metallurgical coke, anthracite, coal pitch, coal tar, crude oil, natural graphite, and other auxiliary materials are coke powder and quartz sand. Graphite electrode is a kind of high temperature resistant graphite conductive material produced by using petroleum coke, needle coke as aggregate and coal pitch as binder through a series of processes such as kneading, molding, roasting, impregnation, graphitization and mechanical processing. Graphite electrode is an important high-temperature conductive material for EAF steelmaking. The graphite electrode is used to input electric energy to EAF, and the high temperature caused by the arc between the electric extremity and the charge is used as a heat source to melt the charge for steelmaking. Some other mineral furnace smelting yellow phosphorus, industrial silicon, abrasives and other materials also use graphite electrodes as conductive materials. Because of its excellent and special physical and chemical properties, graphite electrodes are also widely used in other industrial sectors. The raw materials for producing graphite electrodes are petroleum coke, needle coke and coal pitch.

Petroleum coke is the main raw material for the production of graphitized electrodes, graphitized anodes, graphitized blocks and other graphitized products, as well as the main raw material for the production of pre-baked anodes and anode pastes. Petroleum coke is characterized by a particularly low ash impurity content (general mass fraction is less than 1%), and it is easy to graphitize at high temperatures, and the graphite produced is of good quality. Petroleum coke is one of the by-products of petroleum refining. Residual oil from atmospheric or vacuum distillation of crude oil and petroleum pitch (or residual oil obtained after cracking) can be used as raw materials for coking.
